Baltimore-based Shea Radiance, created by husband and wife duo Funlayo and Shola Alabi, is an all-natural line of beauty products. They started their journey stocking hundreds of Target locations with their hair and skin-care products. After several issues with the super-store, the business, which launched in 2008, almost went under. Thankfully, CEO Funlayo Alabi was able to turn the ship around, Forbes reported.
“People were depending on orders from us, no matter how big or small,” she told Forbes in an interview. “We made promises to those women.”
Alabi decided to take a step back- pulling the products from Target’s shelves. She enrolled in a business accelerator for six months, where she received a $25,000 cash infusion, Forbes reported. She then streamlined the business by decreasing the amount of products and rebranding the packaging.
Alabi hasn’t had her fill of mass retailers and is talks with her local Whole Foods and other natural food grocers.
“Getting the brand into mass retail channels is our ultimate goal,” she said, adding “Challenges aren’t really a reason a quit — they just mean you have to be willing to learn and change.”
